Why Sandals Resorts is the All-Inclusive I Recommend for Plus-Sized Travelers

I want to talk about Sandals.

Not in the way that travel agents usually talk about Sandals — the pristine beaches, the free-flowing drinks, the "romance is included" tagline, the award-winning staff. All of that is true and I will get to it. But I want to start somewhere most travel content never goes: what it actually feels like to walk into a resort as a fat person and not spend the first hour quietly clocking every chair, every pool ladder, every beach lounger, trying to calculate whether this place was built for you.

At most resorts, that mental math starts the second you arrive and does not stop until you leave. At Sandals, it mostly doesn't happen. And if you've never experienced that, you might not understand why that alone is worth talking about.

I'm Sandals certified, I've been there in a size 26 body and in a size 18, and I book these trips for plus size travelers regularly. Here's what you actually need to know.

What Sandals Gets Right for Fat Travelers

The short version is this: Sandals resorts are designed to feel luxurious and comfortable for adult guests, and that design translates well to bigger bodies in a way that a lot of all-inclusive brands simply don't.

The pool furniture is sturdy and wide. The beach loungers hold their weight. The dining rooms use chairs that don't make you feel like you're being squeezed into a space that wasn't built for you. The common areas in the lounges and restaurants are spacious enough to move through without it being a whole thing.

None of this sounds revolutionary. But if you've been to an all-inclusive where the chairs flexed under you, where the pool steps were too narrow, where you spent dinner shifted sideways because the armrests were cutting into your hips; you know exactly how significant it is when a resort just works.

Sandals works. For most of their properties, it genuinely works.

The One Exception I Need to Be Honest About

I tell my clients everything, and that includes the things that most travel agents won't say because they're trying to make the sale.

Sandals Ochi in Jamaica is the one Sandals property I do not recommend for plus size travelers or guests with any mobility concerns.

The property is beautiful. The photos are stunning. And the layout will work against you. Sandals Ochi has significant stairs throughout the resort; not a few steps between levels, but stairs that are a core part of how you move around the property. If navigating inclines and stairs is physically uncomfortable for you, or if you simply want to show up and enjoy yourself without that added challenge, Ochi is not the property.

Every other Sandals property in the portfolio? I have no hesitation. But I would rather tell you the truth before you book than have you arrive somewhere and realize you're managing something nobody warned you about.

What Else You Should Know About Sandals Before You Book

Sandals is adults-only. Every property is 18 and up. If you're traveling with kids, Beaches resorts are the family-friendly brand under the same umbrella. Same quality, different crowd. I book those too.

Both brands now welcome same-sex couples. If you're an LGBTQ+ traveler who has heard older things about Sandals' policies, that has changed. Sandals and Beaches both explicitly welcome same-sex couples and have for several years now. I know this firsthand and I book trips for LGBTQ+ clients to these properties regularly.

Truly all-inclusive means truly all-inclusive. Meals, drinks, water sports, entertainment, airport transfers…it's in the package. You're not nickeled and dimed the second you leave your room. For a lot of travelers, especially first-timers to the all-inclusive format, this is the detail that makes the whole experience click.

Butler suites exist and they are worth knowing about. Most Sandals properties offer butler suite categories. Having a butler means someone is managing your restaurant reservations, bringing drinks to your beach spot, and handling the small logistics that can otherwise eat into your relaxation time. For a milestone trip, like an anniversary, birthday, honeymoon, it's worth the conversation.

Who Sandals Is the Right Call For

Sandals is for the adult who wants to land somewhere beautiful, not think about where dinner is coming from or how much a drink costs, and actually decompress. It's a strong fit for couples celebrating something, solo travelers who want to meet people in a social resort environment, and anyone who has tried a budget all-inclusive and come back feeling like they never really left.

It's also a strong fit for plus size travelers who are tired of showing up somewhere and spending the whole trip managing logistics that a thinner traveler would never even notice. Because at Sandals, in my experience and in the experience of my clients, most of that management just isn't necessary.

You show up. The resort holds up.

Here's where I come in. Sandals has a lot of properties across the Caribbean — Jamaica, Barbados, St. Lucia, the Bahamas, Antigua, Grenada, Curaçao, and more. They are not all the same experience. Some are larger and more social. Some are smaller and more intimate. Some have a particular energy that suits one type of traveler and would frustrate another. Some have beach access that's genuinely beautiful and some have a beach situation I'd want you to know about before you pick.
